Project 2 : Project Description
Project Description
Typographic Hierarchy distinguishes different levels of importance or prominence to different individual messages within a group of typographic messages. In essence, students will be using the principles of visual communication to organize elements into groups and the contrasting typographic forms to emphasize certain words or groups of words as more important or less important than others on a given panel.
Student should also strive to create compositions that display a strong degree of sensitivity and control over the formal relationship created when strong contrasting type forms are assembled together.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this project a student will be able to:
  • Organize typographic information based on a simple modular grid
  • Emphasize levels of information through typographic contrast
  • Select combinations of spatial organization and formal contrast appropriate to a given message.
  • Select appropriate color combinations to support organization and emphasize without reducing legibility/readability.
  • Control hierarchy and organization of information in both large and small scale.
Overview of Tasks
  • First, students will create a series of exercise panels which clearly demonstrate the concepts of typographic hierarchy based on a detailed set of project parameters.
  • Students will assemble these exercises into a workbook for presentation.
  • Next, students will select 3 of their most successful compositions and mount them on Black Presentation Board.
  • Finally, students will create a final color poster based upon the best work they generated in their series of exercises.

Typographic Parameters
Student must use only basic serif or sans serif typefaces for this project. Students cannot use any typefaces that are intended to be used for Display Type. Instead students must use typefaces that were specifically design for setting lengthy text. While it is not a requirement, students are strongly encouraged to use the set of typefaces provided by their instructor at the end of A251 Typography 1.
Technology Parameters
Students must use the application Adobe InDesign for the creation of all panels and the setting of all typographic elements. Panels cannot be created using any other application.
A Stuffit compressed Adobe InDesign CS Grid Template is available for download on the PDF Files Page.
Audience & Effect
The specific audience for this project is all current Herron students and faculty (not just VC students.) The effect that you are trying to achieve through this communication is to inform the specified audience about details regarding the New Building Dedication, and to persuade that audience to attend that event.
Required Written Statements
All students are required to generate a brief written statement evaluating their project work. Students must evaluate their project performance for each of the established Grading Criteria. (If 3 criteria are listed on the grading criteria page then students must write a response to each of those 3 criteria.)
In simple terms, each student must give themselves grades based on the grading criteria. Students must explain in detail why they deserve the grade that they have given themselves for each separate criteria. The instructor will read all statements and take them under consideration when assigning project grades.
  • Printouts of Written Statements are due 1 week after the project due date.
  • Approx. Word Count: 500-1500 words
  • Set the text in 10 pt type. Use one of the following fonts: Arial, Helvetica, Times New Roman, Times. You can use either single-line spacing or double-line spacing.
  • Include your full name plus "A252 Typography 2, Spring 2005" at the top of each printout.
  • Check for misspelled words before you turn in your statements.
