resume | c.v.Pica studio is an independent design studio based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The studio was founded by John Chastain, a designer with over 15 years industry experience. We employ an adaptive design process and an objective approach to our creative output.
our name
Our name is based on an old typography term. A Pica is a small unit of measurement (about 1/6 inch or 4.2 mm) primarily used to measure elements in a typographic composition. It is also the name of one of our dogs. Pica is a standard black-and-tan dachshund. We named the dog years ago, and then somehow the name seemed to fit when we setup this studio.
our process
Our design process is intended to provide structure to the workflow of solving design problems. It provides a flexible framework that manages expectations and establishes a plan for communication and collaboration. We use this process to control cost and manage deadlines and approvals without smothering out creativity, flexibility or innovation.
As the complexity of a project increases so does the need for communication and coordination. Decisions to include research documentation, design or technical specs, tracking of project status, or formal presentations are all based on the complexity of the design problem being addressed.

our approach
Pica studio seeks to clarify meaning of communication. Complex messages often benefit from structured visual organization or a simple typographic solution. Reducing the visual clutter and organizing a thought into a simple clear message. But not all communication is about the literal message. The meaning of a message can be augmented or enhanced through its visual expression. Design can create a resonance between objective meaning and its visual expression. Pica studio seeks to engage audiences with resonant messages and elegent simplicity.
